I have found some similarities between real world events and characters and Star Wars events and characters.
First of all, I believe that the Jedis were modeled after the samurais.
Second of all, I think the Ewoks were modeled after the Miwoks, California coastal Indians.
As for the events, I think Lucas took the whole Cold War struggle and warped it into the conflict between the Empire and the Rebels. As for the Jedi order falling, I think he used the Russian Revolution for that.
I don't know, these are my theories. If anyone thinks differently, please post here.

I know this is an older thread but I thought I'd bring up some points...

I think the fall of the Republic and the creation of the Empire parallels one of two things...

-The fall of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Nazi Germany/The Third Reich (since a lot of subjects in the Galactic Empire are based on Nazi Germany) (plus, Hitler's title was Chancellor)

-The fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire (both cases, a republic becomes and empire, and in both cases, there is corruption within the senate)

I also think the Jedi Purge is either...

-Hitler's purge of the SA (German Storm Troopers) (The Jedi and Storm Troopers were both elite groups within their respective armies and both were purged on order from the each army's highest ranking political figure)

-Joseph Stalin's Purges in the Soviet Union (while less likely then the fist example, this could also fit, as the majority of people Stalin had killed were people Stalin had thought to have questioned him/been his political enemies.)

I think the Separatist crisis leading up to the Clone Wars is....

-The Cold War (In the Cold War, the US and the USSR both built up massive amounts of weapons but never really used them against each other, similarly leading up to the Clone Wars, the Separatists built up armies, as did the Republic)

There are many more connections from history to Star Wars...
