Mission Mars: 2200

Postby sashatlhs on 05,15, 2008

This is a little story I wrote for English:

As we lifted off from the moon base enroute to Mars, we didn’t know what adventures would behold us on our journey. The year was 2200 and Earth was in a state of turmoil. A band of rogue aliens was threatening to attack us and kill everyone on earth. Plus, Earth’s resources had been depleted, the polar ice caps had all melted and coastal areas such as New Orleans and Manhattan had been destroyed. So, the powers of the world, Russia, China, India, the United States and a handful of other countries started looking for another planet. Mars was an option because it had a similar orbit and related seasons to Earth. The only problem was that the whole planet was basically a desert.
I was the main scientist on a panel of top scientific officials and our mission was to find a way to make Mars habitable. One suggestion was to introduce methane in large quantities into the Martian atmosphere and see what would happen. We knew that the methane gas would create warming on the planet’s surface, resulting in the melting of the polar icecaps, which contained vast amounts of water. We were hoping that it would create lakes and rivers. After that, we were going to put genetically engineered algae and oxygen producing bacteria that both made oxygen very quickly. After ten years, we were going to travel to Mars and investigate how ready the planet was for plants, animals, and most importantly, humans. This occurred ten years ago. Today was the day we would go to investigate what had happened.
Our group had a total of ten scientists. We boarded a space shuttle and made our way to the moon to pick up some important supplies. After that, we embarked on our two year journey to study Mars. Even though the space shuttle was faster than the first one ever made, the travel time to Mars was still going to take five months, so we were all cryogenically frozen to conserve supplies. As we approached Mars, we were unfrozen. We looked out the porthole and were amazed at what we saw. There were clouds in the sky and lakes everywhere. We were in awe at how fast the process had changed the surface of the planet. The only thing missing were the plants and animals, but they were also being transported behind us in a much larger spacecraft that reminded us of an Ark. We checked the oxygen level of the Martian atmosphere and were happy to see that it was close to what Earth had, so spacesuits were not necessary. We all assembled into the airlock and as the doors opened, we felt a cool breeze against our skin. We took our first breath of Martian air. It was pure and sweet.
We prepared to take soil samples with the help of some robots to see if it was saturated enough to allow the planting of various plants. Now these plants were no ordinary plants- they were specifically designed to have accelerated growth in the beginning and then a longer life cycle. The soil samples would take about a week to assess. Meanwhile, we took a bunch of hovercrafts and went to see what the rest of the planet looked like. On other parts of Mars, we found many new lakes and rivers. We were already 1,000 miles away from our shuttle, when we found a settlement of aliens. We deduced that these were the aliens who had been sending transmissions to Earth and were threatening to kill us. One of the aliens saw us and sounded the alarm. We quickly turned around and started to accelerate towards the ship. The aliens quickly mobilized and started a pursuit of our crafts. They were slowly gaining on us.
“Radio Mothership and tell her that we have aliens on our [censored]!” I yelled. My colleague quickly called our shuttle and told the people there to assemble defense gun turrets and prepare for an attack. In five minutes, we were at the shuttle and ready to defend ourselves from the imminent alien assault.
As the aliens came into view, we fired a warning shot in an effort to deter them, but they kept on approaching. So we had no choice but to fire at them. When they got closer, they started shooting at us with plasma bombs and laser shots. Our energy shields could barely take the barrage of their weapons, but we retaliated by sending a wave of energy bombs in their direction. We had artificial intelligence robot soldiers with us who were assigned to protect us and they fought bravely. After an hour of battling, the alien threat was eliminated. We counted how many men we had lost. We didn’t lose any humans, but we did lose two of the robot soldiers.
After a few days of recuperating, we decided to return to the alien settlement to see if there was anything useful. We resolved to bring a few soldiers just in case anything happened. We got to the settlement and found several barracks made out of tough but light material. We thought that maybe they would be useful if we decided to stay a little bit longer. We split up and each of us investigated a barracks. I walked into what seemed like the main unit and started searching for useful things. I opened a locker and found blueprints, written by the aliens, for a device that could transform any planet into a habitable one, depending on who was going to live there. My jaw dropped. I quickly ran outside and yelled to the others “Look what I found!!!” Everyone gathered around me and read the blueprints. They were as amazed as I was. “This could totally change our universe!!!” one of the scientists said excitedly.
It hit me. “So that’s why this planet had become oxygenated so fast,” I said. I ran back into the quarters where I found the blueprints and rummaged in the locker. I found what I was looking for- the device itself. It was the size of a laptop. I brought it out for everyone to see. We translated the blueprints from the alien’s language and found that all you had to do was input as much information as you could about your home planet, i.e. the human genome and the genetic material of all living organisms on the planet and other valuable information such as air and soil content. We contacted Houston and asked them to compile as much information as they could about Earth. They sent all of this information in the form of a huge file. We loaded it onto the gadget and let it do its job. The blueprint said that it would take about six months for the device to transform the planet. We decided to freeze ourselves for one month increments to check on the progress of the machine.
After six months, we checked outside and were amazed to see that there was grass on the ground and birds in the air. Everything looked exactly as it did on Earth. We launched a satellite to do a flyby around Mars and take pictures of the whole planet so we could compile a 3D map of New Mars. We were astonished at how accurately the device rendered the planet. Luckily, we didn’t find any other alien encampments. After we were satisfied at how well the planet looked, we determined to fly back early to Earth and tell everyone that Mars had been transformed and now people could move to Mars using a special portal we set up on Mars and Earth. We were hailed as heroes when we returned to Earth, and were allowed unrestricted access to the portal to move between the two planets.

THE END!!!
